The title says it all.

I’m fully aware that I probably voided any warranty that I had on it when I hacked my Nokia 5230 Nuron. It was kind of getting slow and gummed up with stuff, so I figured I’d do a backup, a reset, and then hack away.

I think I’m going to un-hack it. Here are my reasons, in order of least importance.

I can’t afford an internet plan, so any unsigned apps that use the internet (which are a lot) can’t fully function. Lame. I hoped I could find an app that could bypass that, but I haven’t.

It’s slow. It’s slower than it was before I reset it. It boggles my mind how slow it is. I hate it. I send a text message, and I get to watch a loading screen for five seconds before it even sends it to the outbox. It’s like having Windows Vista on my phone. I want to throw it and myself out a window.

Finally, the battery life stinks. The battery used to have a two or three day half-life. Now it’s down to just over a day. I don’t run a VPN server on my phone. I don’t browse the web all day or play games. (Remember my troubles with internet?) Texting and calling people, which, by the way, are the primary functions of any phone, zap the battery like crazy. It didn’t do that before hacking.

So, the bottom line is this: Unless there is an unsigned application that you just cannot live without, I don’t recommend hacking your Nokia Nuron. Believe me, I’m a geek, so I completely understand if you must. But if there are no musts, I don’t think it’s worth it.

Now, if I had tons of time and money to spare, I’d do some testing to see if the hacking application itself is the battery drainer, or if other applications I am using are the culprit, but I don’t, and I’m lazy, and un-hacking it is going to be enough of a pain.

Hmph. Have a good day, and if you hadn’t noticed, the archives are back. Still, a lot of work remains, but it’s getting there, slowly.

I’ve set myself up with a VMware Server box on a small laptop. This box is going to go onto the DMZ segment soon. I’ve had a major problem setting up things though. The main use for it at the moment is to house a Linux Apache MySQL Php server with Ubuntu Server 8.04.1 as the client OS. I am using Ubuntu Server 8.04.1 as the host OS as well, because VMware ESXi Server didn’t like the hardware. I would have rather used that, but I don’t have the money to buy a server that has supported hardware. Hence, the laptop server.
Originally I built the LAMP VM on my desktop, because I hadn’t figured out what to do with the laptop situation, with regard to ESXi being unable to install. Everything worked peachy-keen. Minus the time to install Ubuntu, it took me about 2 minutes to set up the whole thing right up to serving out a quick webpage on my LAN. I was impressed. The simple yet powerful architecture of Ubuntu never fails to amaze me.

Once I figured out what to do with the server and had it set up, I uploaded the LAMP VM through VMware Infrastructure Client, which can be a pain, but is less of a pain than the web GUI. I turned it on, and suddenly found that I could not access the LAN or internet from the LAMP VM.

ifconfig revealed that eth0 had not initialized at all. In fact, there wasn’t even a device at all for it. Only a loopback device. I looked at /etc/network/interfaces. It was configured to DHCP there. Odd, I thought. sudo ifup eth0 yielded weird errors pointing to driver misconfiguration. Driver misconfiguration? The VM was working fine before I uploaded it. What had happened? I tried setting a static IP. Restarted network services. Restarted the VM. Deleted and re-added a NIC from the administration interface. No avail. Was VMware Server misconfigured on my host? Was it vmnet0 that was bridged to the wrong adapter? No, I could get network connectivity on the host (obviously) and the configuration for vmnet0 was bridged to the correct adapter, eth2, on the host. What could possibly be the matter?

Forum searching time! Interestingly, I found almost an entire thread on the Ubuntu forums to this error. That’s where I got some of the ideas I’ve mentioned already. Someone suggested trying ifconfig -a to see if there were any other devices configured. This is where I finally saw an eth1, and it that wasn’t configured to do anything.

So that was it. For some reason, when I moved the VM, the network adapter got changed to eth1, which wasn’t configured in /etc/network/interfaces. Changing the device specified in /etc/network/interfaces from eth0 to eth1 did the trick. Hope this helps. Here is the link to the thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=242918

Quick post. I got another monitor, plugged it into the DVI output on my new NVidia 9800 GT graphics card, and tried to set up the use of both. Interesting results: I could clone the images, use a single display, or use horizontal or vertical spans. Spanning is stretching the desktop over both monitors in the form of one single big display.
I didn’t want this. Spanning causes windows to maximize across both displays. It causes games to do this as well. I think it’d be very cool to use 3 monitors spanned to play a game like Counter-Strike Source, but the window problem I mentioned earlier is sort of a problem for me.
Anyhow, searching was fruitless for a while and I was getting irritated to be honest. How could DualView just not exist? It wasn’t even an option in the NVidia control panel.

Long story short, all I needed to do was reboot the machine. Who knows why it can’t do it without that, but for some reason, it’s just not possible unless the monitor was plugged in during boot-up. Actually, now that I think about it, that makes sense. Oh well.

It’s the new year and I’ve been terribly scarce around here.
Things have moved along in life. I’m back in school after taking a much needed break from a very busy school schedule.
I’ve gotten a chance to work on some other projects, some of which I would like to share with you now.

First off, a friend asked me months ago to get a server up and running for her. The box is a quad-socket Xeon. You heard it, quad-socket. Meaning four separate, physical processors. Not four ALUs. Not four L1 and L2 caches and shared L3. Four. Xeon. 2.8 GHz. Processors. Can you say super duper flashy and cool? That amounts to 11.2GHz of processing POWAH!
Among other things, this box will eventually be serving up virtual desktops for graphics artists in remote locations to use. Daunting, to say the least. But there’s some great things coming from a partnership between VMware and Sun Microsystems in the way of desktop virtualization.

Another thing I’ve been recently given access and administrative rights to, are several game servers and such things. Hopefully I will some day have a fleet of servers for games such as Counter-Strike: Source and other Half-Life 2 mods. Head over to trixGaming for updates. Many thanks to the great folks over at ZebGames for their generosity and support.

Finally, I upgraded (as opposed to downgraded) my computer to use Intel’s dual core technology. This is the first time in many years that I am running Intel architecture instead of AMD. It is also flashy and cool, and I have to say, my Pentium D far outperforms the AMD Turion X2 mobile processor in my laptop. I think I may be leaving AMD behind for Intel’s superior technology when I can afford to, even though AMD still has a good hold on the entry-level processor market.

That’s all for now. Forgive me for leaving you all in the dust, err, rather, back in 2008.

Finally got around to putting trying out Ubuntu 8.10 and I’ve been having less trouble than some others have been having. Now I’m getting things up and running including gTalk using Empathy Instant Messenger. I’ve copied the post from the Ubuntu forums only because I’m tired of clicking links to forum posts, only to find that the thread has been deleted. By the way, this works in my install of 8.10 even though it’s written for 8.04. So, here’s how to get gTalk working, courtesy of vigyani@ubuntuforums.com:

“Hi

Want to voice chat with Google Talk user!!
On Ubuntu 8.04 Empathy can be used to voice chat with Googletalk users.

On an updated Ubuntu 8.04; Using Synaptic Package Manager add the following third party repository and install the packages given below.

Instructions:
System –> Administration –> Synaptic Package Manager

Go to Settings->Repositories
Go to Third Party Software –> Add;
Enter the following line in APT line:

Code:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/telepathy/ubuntu hardy main

Close and Reload

Search and mark the following packages for install:
Empathy
telepathy-gabble
telepathy-mission-control
telepathy-stream-engine

and Apply i.e. install.

Use the latest packages as older packages do not allow Gtalk/Jingle VOIP.

After installing start Empathy (Applications –> Internet –> Empathy Instant Messenger)

Configure your gmail account.

Cheers

It’s been ages and ages since I last posted. School has taken priority over a lot of things with TECHgap.

Been learning a lot about Linux (Ubuntu and SUSE to be exact). Just finished a second esession with another student talking with them about BASH scripting. Anyone who’s inclined, check out Elluminate. My UNIX Administration class is partly online and lectures take place using that. It’s also great for the instruction I’ve been doing myself with other students. I am perplexed at my seemingly having a knack for Linux and programming in particular.

Anyway, I’ve wanted to post for a while now and things seem to be calming down enough for me to find time to do so. I’ll try not to let such a lapse happen again.

So living in a Linux world. I tried putting Ubuntu 8.04.1 and it worked great straight out of the box except for one huge problem: The fan wasn’t working. I still have no idea why there simply was no fan object in /proc/acpi/fan but there wasn’t. It was bizarre. So I’m back to XP for now, but when Ubuntu 8.10 rolls out in a few days I’m going to try again and hope for the best.

I’ve also recently had a lot more luck with VMware Server on Linux hosts. Had success with my Ubuntu install, except for the fan issue, and the extra strain on the CPU from running a virtual machine just about fried my motherboard. I even had a spot of success with converting the VMware Server .rpm installable to .deb for easy installation within Ubuntu using alien. That surprised me, but I just had to try it. I’d already gotten VMware Server to compile fine and I just…wanted more.

There are so many things that I’ve been learning in school, and I feel like I sound giddy and foolish when I say this, but I just love learning. And I love (most of the time) helping my classmates figure out their own problems. One of my instructors says I should think about being a teacher. Maybe I will, who knows.

In other news OpenOffice 3.0 came out recently. Check it out! It’s compatible with Office 2007 now. Huzzah for more open source software!

I feel that I’ve spoken more candidly now than I ever have before here. I’m not sure how I feel about it. We’ll see how it goes. Signing off for now.

Posts seem few and far between, and I’ve got some things to show for it.

At school I’ve put together a separate box to just to run VMs in. I’m not sure if I’m going to keep the setup though, as the host OS is Windows XP. I’m thinking of putting VMware ESXi hypervisor on it and run separate native OS’s, rather than using VMware Server, even though I really like Server’s remote management features. I’d be able to take full advantage of the 2GB of RAM, instead of having to delegate some to the host OS. More to come on that tomorrow. I’m going to give you a full walkthrough on the setup then.

In other news, I’ve also built a better computer for my home desktop. It’s not in a case right now, and so I took a few pictures. I think it looks pretty cool.

The board is by VIA Technologies, and it has a Pentium 4 stocked at 2400MHz and clocked at 2520MHz right now. I plan on taking it up to around 2760MHz, as you might guess from the cooling system. We’ll see how it goes.

It runs stable at 3000MHz, but even my cooling system probably isn’t enough to keep it from burning up. I’m about to test-run Ubuntu 8 on it and see how it performs.

Also, I recently aquired a couple of these to play with:

I’m really excited about those, because they are going to be my super fast network storage drives.

I’ve decided I’m not going to RAID0 them because I’m really not excited about the possibility of losing TWO Raptors, and of course with two drives, RAID5 is impossible as well. If I had three, I’d probably be seriously considering using RAID5, but as it stands, I’m not.

All in all, I’ve got a lot to do. I also have an Athlon 64 processor sitting around looking for a motherboard. If anyone in the Bellingham area is willing to trade said motherboard for some DDR ram, let me know. I also have two Socket A AMD processors that I might be willing to part with.

Well, that’s all for tonight. Happy overclocking!
